Fisherman's Point

Late afernoon.

Located within the Lincoln National Park, which is about 12 k's from Port Lincoln, Fisherman's Point is accessible to 2WD vehicles and those with caravans.  It is just off of the road running through the park.  The road into Fisherman's Point is very short, but rough in places.  A bit of care is needed.  As of July, 2010, costs are $8.50 to enter the National Park and $6 a night per car to camp at Fishermans Point.

The campsites are spread out amongst the trees and are marginally screened from one another.  The ground at the sites nearest the entrance and the toilets is the best, but it becomes increasingly rocky as you get closer to the actual Point itself.  There are no sites right on the Point.  The toilet is the only facility, although rain water is sometimes available.

On your right, as you're facing the point, the ground drops steeply to a fairly long beach which stretches north east towards Engine Point.  The water is shallow and very clear; good for swimming. The fishing off the beach is OK too if you wade out a little and cast towards the weedline.  Mullet, in season, can be plentiful, along with Tommies, Flathead and the occasional Whiting.

The point itself is a great spot to fish.  You will be fishing off of low lying granite rocks and casting into the sand patches amongst the weed and reef.  The water is relatively deep.  Big Leatherjackets are common and can become a bit of a pain, biting off hooks and stealing bait.  However, Whiting are also caught here on a regular basis, along with Garfish (if float fishing), Tommies and Squid.  I spent an evening here throwing small metal lures around, just as it was getting dark.  I ended up with a small Salmon, a few Tommies and three Snook.  Good fun.

Kangaroos are sometimes seen here, and I remember waking up in the ealry hours to a horrible slurping noise.  I peered out of the tent to see a rather large kangaroo drinking from my washing up bowl.  I have also seen them eating squid that had been left out for bait, so be careful what you leave lying around.

Like most places on and around the coast, the sunrises and sunsets can be spectacular.  Sunsets at Fisherman's Point can be, but sunrises are a bit hard to see, due to the raised ground at the back of the campsite.

A beautiful spot with plenty of shade and good fishing.  You may have to share it during peak times, but off peak times should be relatively quiet.  A great spot if you have kids.
